EASLIS Holds Performance Improvement Course

The East African School of Library and Information Science (EASLIS) in conjunction with Makerere University Library are hosting a Short Performance Improvement Training Programme for librarians from South Sudan. The two-month programme is part of the activities for the EdLib Project (Capacity Building in Southern Sudan: Educating Librarians for the Future).

This project seeks to build capacity in Southern Sudan institutions of higher learning by educating librarians, especially females, in Library and Information Sciences. It is run under the partnership of the University of Juba, University of Bahr-El-Ghazal, the Upper Nile University, University of Bergen Library and Oslo University College’s Faculty of Journalism, Library and Information Science.

The need for the training followed a study by Prof. Elisam Magara, Project coordinator, who noted that there was a big skills gap among library staff in universities and other tertiary institutions in Southern Sudan.

“It was envisioned that the short performance improvement training would provide these librarians with basic library and information science knowledge and equip them with skills for running the libraries,” Magara added.

So far, 14 library staff from the University of Juba, Bahr-el-Ghazal University and Upper Nile University have undergone four-month training in two phases. The first phase ran for two months from July-September 2010 and the second phase is currently running for two months from June-July 2011. The course covers basic skills in Information, Technology and Communication, Information Processing (classification and catalouging), Library Administration and Routines, information searching skills and library automation using Koha. Thereafter, the librarians undertake a one-month internship opportunity at the Makerere University Library.

EdLib is funded by the Norwegian University Cooperation Programme for Capacity Development in Sudan (NUCOOP) under the Norwegian Programme for Development Research and Education (NUFU).
