EASLIS trains African Union Commission Staff

Two academic staff from EASLIS, Francis Ekwaro & Robert Kayiki, traveled to Ethiopia to facilitate a workshop organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) for its middle Records Managers in Electronic Records Management on the 26th June- 7th July 2011. 18 AUC staff were trained in Adama (Nazret) the capital of Oromia State of Ethiopia. The workshop imparted knowledge and skills among the AUC middle Records Managers.

ERM training is key in preparing Records and Archives professionals for the shift from paper based practices to automated and paperless records and archives. The workshop reflected and dwelt on the framework of Electronic Records Management; Electronic Filing, Digitization, Required Resources and Organizational Responsibilities for Implementing Electronic Records Management Systems (ERMS), Application of Web 2.0 Technologies in ERM, Available Software for Building ERMSs, their Selection, Appraisal and Evaluation Techniques, Creation and Database Design and Indexing, Information Search and Retrieval in Electronic Systems, Security, Legislation & Policy Issues, and Managing Records Automation Projects.

Preliminary reports indicated that the participants learned new knowledge and skills relevant to their work and affirmed their enthusiasm to adopt electronic records management practices.
