EASLIS hosts Kawempe Youth Centre Team

The East African School of Library and Information Sciences (EALSIS) on 18th Oct 2017 hosted the Kawempe Youth Centre (KYC). The KYC team was led by Mrs. Esther Kyazike (CEO, KYC) and key presenter during the 3-hour talk session. The topic for discussion was the Roles of Libraries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).

Mrs. Kyazike was humbled and honored to be addressing students from EALSIS, Makerere University. During her presentation she briefly highlighted on her life story as well as her work as a library attendant at the National Library of Uganda (NLU). It was during her tenure at NLU that she realized there was a lack of access to educational and reading materials for the youth. She therefore started KYC, initially as a library project in a school classroom in 1999. Its objective was to build literate communities and promote a reading culture for the youth in Uganda. Through its objective KYC was also able to address the 17 Sustainable Development Goal’s using some of the programmes listed below;
•    The Mobile Library Service outreach programme for schools that cannot afford to establish their own libraries. Currently, they provide library support services to approximately 26 primary and secondary schools.
•    The health programme that works with health services providers within the community to offer HIV/ AIDS voluntary testing and counseling, blood donations, and other sensitization activities.
•    ICT 4 Development programme where they offer affordable ICT training in which youth are trained in basic computer operations involving Microsoft Office packages, Accounting systems etc.
•    Internship/Volunteer programme aimed at providing volunteer placements/internships to local and international volunteers to work on educational, health and community-based projects in its project areas.
In concluding, Mrs. Kyazike thanked EASLIS for the opportunity to address the students. She encouraged and requested interested students who needed additional information to visit their premises on Bombo Rd. Kampala. They also could join their Facebook group page (Kawempe Youth Centre) to access other opportunities.
